By Raymond Meyer

A bariatric surgery is one type of surgical operation that are often done on people who have obesity. The adjustable gastric band and the sleeve gastrectomy are two of the most common types of surgeries for weight loss. According to a research, these two procedures causes loss of weight in long term, recovery for diabetes, improvement of the factors in cardiovascular risks, and as well as to reduce mortality.

These two surgical methods can be only recommended for a person with obesity and those who have a 40 BMI or the body mass index. These methods are also for people with obesity having a 30 BMI or having some major medical conditions like having diabetes. And this would literally mean that people having a 30 or more of BMI become candidates for the gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy surgical operations.

The laparoscopic adjustable gastric band or LAGB is commonly called as lap band. In this procedure, a silicone device will be placed around on the top part of the stomach for the treatment of obesity. The purpose if this is to slow the food consumption, thus, reducing the food amount to be consumed.

People may sustain and achieve weight loss. Sustaining and achieving it can be done through the reduction of appetite, proper selection of food healthy options, limitation of the food intake, and lastly is the progression of food when being digested from top to the bottom parts. However, methods like this may be done only for people doing the proper exercise and proper diet before having the operation.

According to a research, this surgery type is not an easy option for those people that suffer from obesity. And the reason for this is due to the drastic steps being performed and the involvement of severe risks and pain like some other surgical operation types. However, the procedure is less invasive and patients can remain in the hospital for just a few days after the surgery. Some other advantages include faster recovery, have smaller scars, and lesser pain unlike other methods.

One last advantage is it does not involve staples and removing some parts of the stomach and also, the intestines are not moved. And since the materials used are biocompatible, it can remain in the body without casing any harm. However, not all obese patients are candidates to this. Those who are extremely obese and who already have undergone abdominal surgeries may be required to have open approach.

The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is another surgical procedure for weight loss where in the stomach will be reduced by 15 percent of its size. This is done by removing a large part of the stomach in curvature areas. This would result to a tube or sleeve like form.

This method type of weight loss is one of the very common options in New York. Parts of the stomach are removed longitudinally for about five to six centimeters from the antrum to the fundus near the cardia. Most often, the stomach size remaining approximately is about 150 milliliters.

The surgery are also applied to children and adolescents. Based on some studies, there is a large loss amount of weight in ages five to twenty one years. Complications may occur after conducting the surgery which include sleeve leaking, vomiting, esophageal pain, blood clots, blood infections, etc.
